Rethinking Love as Passion: Jeanette Winterson’s The Daylight Gate

Jeanette Winterson’s magical realist love stories, such as The Passion, have been read by some critics in terms of a tendency to idealise romance transformative passion that transcends social structures. In this article, I propose recent gothic novel, Daylight Gate, critically revises set Romantic themes first broached exposing and interrogating the fantasy scenario at centre romantic love. This narrative about magic devil explores ambivalence possession—diabolical contractual—before using critique desire for transcendence implied “undying love”. Metaphysics becomes metaphor metapsychology, where motif undying connected fatal is complicated traversal union two immortal souls. These revisions effect reversing implications earlier treatment love, turning it back from personal towards engagement with political.
